Overview of ANXIETY

We all experience elements of worry and concern in our daily lives, some of us hide it well and some of us overtly show it. Whether it is starting a new job, public speaking, meeting new people or a significant event in our lives, we can all relate to that sense of fear and nervous disposition of the ever-looming event. However, the problem occurs when this worry and concern or ANXIETY becomes disproportionate to the actual event itself.

Sufferers of Anxiety, such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), are constantly in a state of alert. Their days are spent over thinking, over analysing, returning to the same conclusions, fretting, worrying and unable to relax with even the most straightforward of situations. This results in poor sleep patterns, diminished social skills, physical effects on their health and the inability to live their lives to their full potential.

This not only impacts on them but those around them.  Everyone may have their own specific focus of Anxiety but make no mistake this is an exhausting process which does affect them both physically and mentally, spiralling into an existence driven by fear and constant dread.

Anxiety can manifest itself in many different ways and through many different triggers, and may be treated with many different approaches. Whether it is Social Anxiety, Specific Phobias or even Assertiveness, the main focus is on re-programming how you interpret your thoughts and triggers and how your body responds.

Therapy is designed to train YOU to become your own therapist and incorporate and utilise the techniques and skills that you acquire during treatment. Therapy should not be about months of ‘talking’ but rather setting Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time focussed (SMART) targets and experiencing significant results after each session and in between.

Therapy is not a gimmick quick fix either, it integrates Psycho-education into each session to help you understand what Anxiety is and how it is treated. This is knowledge that will stay with you and allow you to further develop as an individual and apply this education to other areas and events you may face in your life, making you more confident and able to deal with the most simplest to challenging situations that you may encounter. Most people don’t even know they are Anxious.

Hypnosis, alongside Cognitive behavioural Therapies, has been scientifically proven in the treatment of Anxiety and its related conditions.

Examples of Negative, Unhelpful and Irrational Thoughts

In the workplace

e.g staying up until 2am to work on a general presentation for work the next day. Constantly changing the colour scheme and fonts to make it look ‘right’, catastrophising that your colleagues will judge you and conclude you are inadequate, which therefore means that they don’t value you, which means you will lose your job, which means you will lose your house, which means your relationship will end, which means you be homeless and alone…

In your free time

e.g plucking up the courage to attend your local gym, but every time you use a piece of equipment you think everyone is looking, therefore they think you look unfit and overweight, which means they must be laughing at you, which means they must be secretly taking videos to post on social media, therefore you stand at the back, try not to sweat and spend the whole time in a state of nervous trepidation and fear of judgement…at the cost of £55 per month!

In your relationships

e.g struggling to voice your opinions in fear of upsetting a friend or family member. Worrying about the consequences of what they may say or do and what they will think of you. This leads to repressed emotions, repressed thoughts, you go along with situations which causes resentment and anger which manifests in arguments and negative behaviours. ‘If I tell them not to come for Christmas dinner, they will hate me, my husband will be angry , it will upset the children, they won’t talk to me again…’

In your lifestyle

e.g Fear of flying, meeting new people, spiders, obsessive compulsions, overthinking, catastrophising, mind reading, black and white thoughts, performance worries, public speaking, dealing with confrontation, social situations and events…

The list is exhaustive. In essence Anxiety means:

‘Something bad is going to happen and I won’t be able to cope’
